A Current Transformer (CT) steps down a large primary current to a small, measurable secondary current for metering and protection relays; a Potential Transformer (PT) does the same for voltage. Every HT metering point and protection scheme depends on correctly rated and calibrated CTs and PTs — undersized or mismatched units are a common reason a DISCOM or CEIG inspector rejects a metering panel at commissioning.
A Vacuum Circuit Breaker (VCB) is typically used in indoor HT panel boards for its compact size and reliable fault-clearing. A Ring Main Unit (RMU) is a sealed, gas- or air-insulated switchgear unit built for outdoor or compact secondary substation use, often where multiple feeders need to be looped in a ring configuration. The choice usually comes down to the substation layout and whether the installation needs to be indoor-panel-based or a compact outdoor unit.
A compact secondary substation packages a distribution transformer, RMU or switchgear, and LT panel into a single pre-fabricated enclosure — used where space is limited or a fast, standardised installation is needed, such as commercial complexes or industrial parks. They're increasingly common in utility tender specifications for 11kV/33kV distribution because they reduce on-site civil and electrical work compared to a conventional brick-and-mortar substation room.
