There's no fixed capacity that fits every factory or commercial building — the right system size depends on your available roof area, structural load capacity, and actual consumption profile, not a rule of thumb per square foot. That's why every project starts with a site survey and shadow analysis: it's the step that turns 'somewhere between 50 kWp and 5 MWp' into an actual number for your facility.
System cost and payback period move with capacity, equipment tier, site-specific factors like roof type and shading, and the net metering terms your DISCOM applies — so a figure quoted for one factory rarely holds for another. We size and quote every project after a site assessment rather than off a standard price list, which is also why we’d rather give you an assessed number than an estimate that doesn’t hold up once work starts.
With net metering, the DISCOM meter records both what the site draws from the grid and what the rooftop system exports back — the two are netted against each other, so the bill reflects net consumption rather than gross usage. This is different from gross metering (where all solar generation is sold separately and all consumption is billed in full), and which arrangement applies depends on the DISCOM, consumer category, and — in Andhra Pradesh — project size: APERC Regulation 4 of 2023 caps new net-metering connections at 500 kWp, with gross metering (up to 5 MWp per location) as the route for larger rooftop installations.
Source: APERCRCC, metal sheet, and trapezoidal roofs each carry load and resist wind uplift differently, so the mounting structure — ballasted vs penetrative fixing, rail spacing, wind-load calculations — has to be engineered per roof type rather than applied generically. Getting this wrong doesn't just affect cost, it affects whether the structure holds up to the site's actual wind zone over the system's operating life.
PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is the central government's subsidy scheme for rooftop solar, but it is scoped to residential households. Commercial and industrial rooftop installations — the segment most of this service covers — go through standard net metering approval with the DISCOM instead, and in some cases separate central or state incentives for commercial solar, rather than this particular residential scheme.
