CEIG approval comes up constantly around HT electrical projects in AP and Telangana, but it's often confused with the separate DISCOM approval that also has to happen before a connection goes live. Here's what CEIG approval actually is, when it applies, and what tends to slow it down.
CEIG stands for the Chief Electrical Inspector to Government — the statutory authority responsible for confirming that an electrical installation is safe before it's energised. Any HT installation above 250kW in Andhra Pradesh or Telangana needs this clearance, and it applies regardless of whether the installation is a factory, a substation, a solar plant, or a commercial complex.
People frequently use these terms interchangeably, but they come from separate authorities doing separate jobs. CEIG signs off on the safety of the installation itself — wiring, protection, earthing, equipment ratings. The DISCOM separately approves synchronisation and energisation onto its distribution network. Both are required, and getting one does not automatically get you the other.
Before a CEIG inspection can even be scheduled, the installation's Single Line Diagram has to go through statutory drawing approval — a technical review confirming the design meets safety and protection-coordination requirements. Skipping ahead to construction before this is approved is one of the most common causes of delay, because any mismatch between the built installation and the approved drawing gets flagged at final inspection.
CEIG jurisdiction is split by voltage. Installations above 33kV are handled directly by the Chief Electrical Inspector's office, while smaller HT loads are typically processed through the Electrical Inspector at the regional or district level. Filing with the wrong office is a preventable delay that trips up projects that assume there's a single point of contact for every voltage level.

Incomplete or inconsistent documentation is the single biggest reason applications come back with deficiency notes rather than moving straight to inspection scheduling.
If an inspector raises a deficiency note during inspection, the installation has to be rectified and re-inspected before the certificate is issued — and re-inspection has to be scheduled again from the inspectorate's queue, not the applicant's. Projects that budget time for at least one rectification cycle tend to hit realistic timelines; those that assume single-pass approval often don't.
The initial approval is project-specific, but CEIG certificates require periodic renewal and installations remain subject to periodic inspection — it is not a single clearance that never needs revisiting.
It can, but it carries risk — if the built installation deviates from what gets approved later, that mismatch is typically caught at final inspection and has to be corrected before the completion certificate is issued.
